As long as you want! or at least as long as you can handle. You can't do anything forever, but you can certainly try.

We aren't sure. Presumably the first person to fall in, but we aren't exactly keeping score.

Why would I want to fall in this pit?

Why would anyone do anything? Albert Camus believed that the only meaning in life is that which you create for yourself. So why not fall for bit? It couldn't hurt.
